The International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa was founded in May 1999 in order to conduct research, development, training, and dissemination of information in the areas of educational management, curriculum development, teacher education and distance education. The Institute works closely with other institutions with a view to:

address the educational, technical and professional needs of member
states; * provide a forum for sharing both positive and negative experiences so that institutions and education systems benefit from work done by sister bodies; * bring the latest research and development in Africa and globally to institutions in Africa; * enhance the capacities of regional, national, and local level institutions; * provide opportunities for technology improvements, such as the use of electronic media for networking and educational purposes. |
The Institute links with other African institutions sharing the same objectives, particularly with the Organization of African Unity (OAU) which will assist in developing the political support for education for all in Africa as part of its Decade of Education (1997-2006) programme. The Institute also works closely with the working groups of the Association for the Development of Education in Africa (AEDA), another key partner of the Institute.
The main thrust of the Institute is to work with government ministries and departments, especially those active in educational planning, management, curriculum development, and distance education. The Institute also works to strengthen African non-governmental organizations, including the Forum for African Women Educationalist's (FAWE), research networks, and professional associations, such as teachers' associations.
